My brother from Tennessee probably thinks that Nebraska is as flat as a week old prairie cow pie. Well, I'm gonna show him.
Join me and my little brother for an extra hilly edition of the Bacon Ride this Sunday. We'll be starting early from downtown and might be looking to make a century ride out of it.
What: Gravel and streets ride to Platte River State Park for breakfast buffet, then back. 71 miles (4,100 feet gain), starting/finishing at Stinson Park in Aksarben Village. Ride with us from downtown for a larger looping 104 mile ride (5,700 feet gain).
When: Sunday, June 23, 2013. Meet at 6am. Rollout by 6:15am.
Where: Stinson Park in Aksarben Village, 67th St. and West Center Rd. [ map ]
Pace: 12-18 MPH. We'll regroup as necessary, or potentially break into smaller groups to accommodate changes in pace preference.
Equipment: Bring a bike that can handle the rough gravel roads. Cross bikes work the best, but I've seen it done on road, mountain, and hybrid bikes. Bring water; it's going to be hot! Bring flat tire fixing supplies and equipment. You'll need about $12 (cash or plastic) for breakfast and tip, as well as money for resupply along the way. Bring $0.50 in case we ride over a toll bridge.
Options: Meet downtown for a longer ride or Walnut Creek Recreation Area [ map ] for a shorter ride. Leave comments below to make arrangements for either of these.

Wednesday Night Gravel Ride, 30 miles, Suitable for Beginners
I've got a new lighting system that I want to try out and I can't wait until the weekend.
What: 30 mile gravel roads loop with about 1700 feet of elevation gain. Start in Papillion and loop through Springfield. If necessary, we might stop at the convenience store there for a break, bathrooms, etc. All are welcome.
When: Wednesday, March 27, 2013, 6:30pm
Where: Meet at Papillion - La Vista South High School near 108th St. and Highway 370. Park near the football field.
Pace: Easy and relaxed. One of us is trying a new single speed 29er MTB. Fastest flat speed for him on that bike is about 12MPH. The rest of us might match our gears to his just to keep it fun. This is a no-drop ride, but consider this event carefully against your skills and ability.
Notes: Bring a light! This is important. There's not much ambient light out in the country. A rear flasher is a really good idea, too. There will be a full moon, but don't count on that to get you by. It's getting warmer, but you'll also need appropriate clothing to handle the change in temperature as night sets in. Also bring flat fixing supplies.

Sunday 70 mile Pottawattamie Co. Gravel Ride
What: 70 miles of mostly gravel roads through Pottawattamie County, Iowa
When: Sunday, February 3, 2013, 8:45 a.m. meet with a 9:00 a.m. rollout
Where: Meet at the Wabash Trace parking area near Traceview Loop and Pioneer Trail in Council Bluffs, IA. Note: This is about 4 miles southeast down Pioneer Trail from the Iowa School for the Deaf. [ map ]
Bikes: Cross bikes recommended
Pace: Not sure. I'm trying out some new 38mm tires, so I want to see how it works out. I'm hoping for 13-18 MPH.
Route: Through or near Council Bluffs, Macedonia, Carson, Oakland, Treynor, and back to Council Bluffs. There may be an opportunity to refuel in Oakland, however, be prepared to carry all the nutrition you might need for the 70 miles. Expect about 5500 feet in elevation gain. There are plenty of opportunities to pinch off some of the loop to shorten the trip if we decide to wrap it up or if anyone needs to peel off for whatever reason.
Route map:
Extras: Bring whatever tools and supplies you need to fix a flat. Seriously. This is not optional.

Gravel Century, Sunday, October 14, 2012
A forecast for potentially severe weather has canceled the North O! Rock Road Jackrabbit Hundy 100 mile gravel race that was scheduled for Saturday, October 13, 2012.
However, the weather for Sunday is looking splendid! If you still want to ride, come out Sunday, October 14, 2012 at 8:00 am for a casual, non-competitive 100 mile ride through some of the beautiful hilly and rocky roads in Washington and Burt Counties. The start and end point is at Bennington Lake near 168th and Pawnee Road [ map ].
Note that this ride isn't organized by or connected with the fine folks who have organized this annual race event in the past. We'd simply be using their cue sheets and riding the same course.
There's no need to register or RSVP. Just show up. However, it's fun to know who's coming, so feel free to discuss in the comment space below. You may email scottredd@yahoo.com for more information.
Also, note these very important details:
The course is 105 miles and consists mostly of gravel roads. The course has a few miles of Minimum Maintenance Roads which may be muddy after Saturday's rain. Many of the roads are in a grid system, so it's pretty easy to modify your ride to avoid mud, or cut the ride short if you desire.
The GPS route is not guaranteed to be accurate, but it's what I am using. You can download the GPX or TCX file from the RideWithGPS web site and load it into your Garmin, cycling smartphone app, or whatever. The cue cards and map are from the official Jackrabbit route last year.
Parking:
You may park on the north side of Bennington Lake in designated areas. Note that this area is private property with some public use granted, so please respect the area accordingly. There are no restroom facilities, and there are no trash cans, so pack-in/pack-out.
Special Thanks:
Thanks to Dave Tyler for organizing this race in years past. We hope to be able to ride the real race with you next year.

Also, note these very important details:
- Nobody is in charge or leading the ride
- You are 100% responsible for you
- Have a bail-out plan
- There are no aid stations or vehicles
- There are little or no opportunities for food and water along the way, so bring what you need
- These are public roads, open to any and all traffic. Ride lawfully, as you would anywhere else
- The course is not marked, so bring cue sheets, GPS, compass, or whatever you need to find your way
- You can race if you want, but nobody is looking. Use Strava if you want a virtual race along this course.

I've never ridden this area before, so I'm not totally sure what to expect with conditions, pace, and availability of convenience stores. Plan to bring all the food and water that you need for the ride, plus supplies to fix a flat. All are welcome, and there are always opportunities for regrouping, but be sure to know your escape routes and have a backup plan if you decide to pull the plug.
EDIT: Fred reminds us that the Spring time change is this weekend. That means that Sunday at 8am will feel like 7am. "Spring forward!"

Bacon/Danish Ride for Jolene, Sunday, August 7
Join us Sunday, August 7, 2011for a Bacon/Danish Ride as we wish Jolene well in her move to Copenhagen.
Meet at 7:00am outside of Jones Bros. Cupcakes at Aksarben Village.
The pace will be relaxed and conversational, but be prepared for bursts of spirited hill climbing among those who enjoy that sort of thing. This will be a no-drop ride, with plenty of options for regrouping, but you'll have to arrange your own rescue if you can't or don't want to finish the ride.
Plan for 60-70 miles of mixed trail, residential, gravel roads and blacktop highways. It's still hot out in the afternoon, so be sure to bring plenty of water and nibbles. There will be opportunities to stop at a convenience store in Springfield on the way out and the way back, if the group desires.
The halfway point features an all-you-can eat breakfast buffet at the Platte River State Park. Bring about $11 to cover your food and a tip. Credit cards are accepted. Here you can load up on bacon, and maybe a danish to celebrate Jolene's upcoming Denmark adventure. There are vegetarian options, as well.
Routes
RSVP here, or on the Facebook event page (optional, but helps us plan the event).
This may be your last chance to ride with Jolene for some time, unless you want to visit her in Denmark.
